Indian team is gearing up for their most crucial red-ball tour of this year, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This series is going to be make or break for not only some senior batters but also for the team whose WTC final 2025 qualification is hanging. Ahead of the departure for the Australia tour, the team India head coach had a press conference where he revealed some key inputs ahead of the Test series. He also dropped a major hint on Rohit Sharma’s availability for the Perth Test. He noted that Rohit Sharma's participation in the first Test against Australia in Perth remains uncertain. Jasprit Bumrah is set to take on the role of captain for the match if Rohit remains unavailable. Interestingly, both Easwaran and Rahul struggled during the practice match against Australia A in Melbourne, sparking discussions about Shubman Gill potentially stepping back into the opening role. However, Gambhir clarified that the team management has yet to make any decisions or hold discussions on this matter. He also mentioned that the team is not focusing on the World Test Championship (WTC) final but every series they play is important for them. Gautam Gambhir in the press conference said: “Not looking at WTC final qualification. Every series is important irrespective of what's happened in the past. We are keen to go and perform well in Australia. Abhimanyu Easwaran, KL Rahul are the options we have as Rohit's replacement. Will choose to play the best XI closer to the first Test.” He further said: “There are times you go with experienced players as well. He can bat at the top, middle order and at No. 6 as well. He can keep wicket; can do the job for us if Rohit is not available for the first Test.” The first Test match of the BGT 2024-25 is scheduled to be played in Perth, starting from November 22.
