There, Rohit Sharma opened up about his father Gurunath Sharma’s deep love for Test cricket and his disappointment when Rohit retired from the format in May 2025. Rohit said, "My father has always been a fan of red-ball cricket. He doesn’t like this new-age cricket. Even when I scored 264 in an ODI, there was no excitement from him. But if I scored 30s or 40s in Tests, he talked about it in detail. That’s the kind of love he had for the game.” Gurunath, who worked in a transport company, sacrificed a lot for Rohit’s career. Rohit added, “My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with red ball, obviously. So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that's my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible.” Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement on May 7, with a small Instagram post. During his Test career, Rohit scored 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. He captained India to the 2023 World Test Championship final, where they were defeated by Australia.
