A defining moment from Australia’s gripping Boxing Day Test victory against India has earned the prestigious Wisden Photograph of the Year title. The winning image, captured by veteran Getty Images photographer Quinn Rooney, immortalizes Nathan Lyon and his teammates in a fervent appeal for LBW against Mohammed Siraj. The dramatic scene unfolded as Australia sealed a dominant 184-run win, clinching a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rooney, a seasoned professional with nearly two decades in cricket photography, has chronicled over 40 Australian Test matches. His ability to anticipate the action paid off when Lyon bowled the 80th over with a packed field around the bat. Rooney reflected, "I knew the new ball was likely to be taken for the next, so I was praying for a wicket before the fielders retreated further from the bat. Luckily, the whole team turned and appealed for the lbw -- which won them the match." Eagar remarked, “The Royal Ballet could hardly stage a better ensemble. The synchronization is impeccable, likely backed by a thunderous ‘Howzat!’ The photographer’s execution is flawless—timing is everything in a shot like this.” Rooney’s image will take pride of place in the 2025 edition of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, set for release on April 24. It will also be exhibited at the Kia Oval for the next 12 months, alongside ten shortlisted entries and three winning submissions from the amateur category. Among the amateur winners, Rajan Topiwala’s striking frame stood out, securing him a spot in cricket’s visual hall of fame. The Wisden Photograph of the Year continues to celebrate the art of cricket photography, rewarding those who capture the sport’s raw intensity and beauty. For Rooney, this honor reaffirms his deep connection with the game and the craft he has perfected for years.
