Former World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten has praised Shubman Gill’s game intelligence and leadership traits, ahead of India’s five-match Test series in England. Speaking to JioHotstar, Kirsten—who guided India to its 2011 World Cup title—described Gill as someone “with a good brain for the game” and an individual who “walks the talk.” Kirsten worked closely with Gill during his stint as batting coach of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. With Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket last month, the 24-year-old Gill has now been named India’s Test captain. The first match of the series begins Friday at Headingley, where Gill will lead a largely fresh unit. Kirsten said, “I think Shubman is going to be a great leader. He's a smart cricketer—he's got a good brain for the game and understands his game. He's very talented and a nice human being, which I think is really important.” He added that Gill’s strength lies in his preparation and discipline. “The one thing I really like about Shubman is that he walks the talk. He's very organised, very diligent with his training and preparation, and that sets a great example for other players.” Read also: Watch: Rohit Sharma Says "Are Kay Karto Tu?" to Fan in Viral Video Gill Faces Weight of Expectation with Leadership and Batting Role With Virat Kohli also retired from the red-ball format, Gill inherits the key No. 4 spot in addition to the captaincy. His Test numbers in England are modest, averaging below 15 in three matches. But with added responsibilities now on his shoulders, expectations are considerable. Kirsten noted, “When you come into these leadership positions, you're going to be put under pressure, and your leadership will be tested. For any young leader, your ability to learn how to lead, improve, and grow is constantly under scrutiny. But I believe he has all the raw materials to become a really good leader.” Former Australian batter Matthew Hayden also weighed in, offering measured optimism. Hayden said, “Shubman has huge shoes to fill. He'll have to find his footing in Test match cricket. There's a very small sample size when it comes to his experience here in England.” He added, “Shubman is a very good player, and he's got all the attributes needed to succeed in English conditions.”
