Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has officially become a British citizen, complete with a passport, which paves the way for him to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) down the line. The 34-year-old gained this citizenship through his wife, Narjis Khan, who is a British national. Since the inaugural season, Pakistani cricketers have faced a ban from the IPL. However, with his new British passport, Amir can now register as a British overseas player in various franchise competitions worldwide, including the IPL. The left-arm fast bowler has also shared his eagerness to join one of the top franchise leagues globally. Even with his British citizenship in hand, it will be intriguing to see if any of the 10 IPL franchises decide to pick him during the auction, especially considering his history as a former Pakistan international. Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who last donned the Pakistan jersey in 2007, became a UK citizen and was signed by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) before the 2012 season. He went on to play two seasons with Punjab, making 22 appearances and amassing 382 runs along with 29 wickets. He also played a match for the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015. With Mohammad Amir's new British citizenship, the door is now open for a possible return to the IPL, as he can register as an overseas player. However, whether he gets selected will hinge on the interest from franchises, particularly given his background as a Pakistan international, with Azhar Mahmood’s previous IPL experience serving as a rare example.
