Following Sachin Tendulkar's refusal of interest in the prime BCCI job, the focus has shifted to ex-Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh. The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has purportedly nominated the 45-year-old, who boasts 367 international caps across all formats. Though Harbhajan has made no comments to the media, the official image will be revealed only after nominations are made in writing, as only candidates with the support of a state association can run. The governing BJP, which plays significant roles in BCCI matters, has traditionally favored accomplished sportspersons as leaders. Previously Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny were elevated to the BCCI presidency with this approach. Harbhajan's possible candidacy seems in line with this tendency, although this will be confirmed only after the nomination process. The schedule for the election has been released, candidates can be nominated between September 20 and 21, and there will be scrutiny between September 22. Withdrawal of candidates is possible on September 23, after which the last list of the candidates will be issued. Incumbents Devajit Saikia, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, and Rohan Dessai are likely to remain in secretary, treasurer, and joint secretary positions, respectively, and contests for those posts are unlikely. State associations had to send their representatives' names for the AGM by September 12, with the final list coming out on September 13. Candidates will have to divulge any previous elective positions held in the BCCI or its full members, as per BCCI electoral officer AK Joti. All such information is to be given in a notarized Form C, specifying all the posts and durations. With fewer than two weeks remaining before the nomination deadline, everyone is now waiting for Harbhajan Singh to make his position clear. The next few days will say if the former India bowler will formally enter the fray for one of Indian cricket's most powerful jobs.
