Frustration brewed at Edgbaston during Day 2 of the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, as former England batter and veteran commentator David Lloyd slammed the Indian team for what he termed “unnecessary interruptions.” Lloyd, writing in his Daily Mail column, expressed irritation over delays caused primarily by Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja, who contributed a resilient 89 in India’s commanding first-innings total of 587, took two extended breaks during his stay at the crease—one for medical attention after a blow to the hand, and another merely 40 minutes later. These stoppages, according to Lloyd, disrupted the match’s flow and cost valuable playing time. He wrote, “Only 15 minutes into the second morning, Jadeja stopped the game, had a drink and took a couple of pills… After 40 minutes, he took another break. The umpires appear powerless.” Calling for immediate intervention from the ICC, Lloyd suggested rule revisions to deal with such disruptions. He added, “Any injury should be treated off the field while a new batter comes out. Keep the game moving. Get on with it. My mates in the Eric Hollies haven’t paid £85 to watch the grass grow.” Read also: Phil Simmons Leaves Sri Lanka Tour Midway Due to Medical Reasons Pitch Tensions and Gamesmanship: Jadeja’s Conduct Draws Mixed Reactions Apart from the delays, Jadeja’s repeated incursions into the protected area of the pitch caught the attention of England skipper Ben Stokes. The ‘danger zone’—vital for ensuring equal bounce for both teams—became a point of contention as Stokes brought it up several times with the on-field umpires. Lloyd, however, offered a candid, if cheeky, take on Jadeja’s actions. He wrote, “I was so interested watching the histrionics of Ravindra Jadeja, the experienced street fighter of this India team. He obviously wants something to aim at… so nearly every other delivery, he was down the pitch, scratching about with his feet. Well done, Ravi. I’d have done the same.” Apart from Jadeja, the Indian skipper was suffering from some back pain issue, for which he had to summon the physio more than once. And for once, the treatment took a bit more time, so the crowd started booing him. Even the English captain Ben Stokes was seen mocking Jadeja fpr having drinks within 15 minutes of coming to the pitch.
