Julian Metherell has been confirmed as the next president of the Marylebone Cricket Club, set to assume office in October 2026, succeeding Ed Smith. The appointment follows Metherell’s involvement in the Hundred equity sale and his role as chair of London Spirit, reflecting a shift in the club’s administrative alignment. Metherell, an MCC member for four decades, has a professional background in finance, including a tenure at Goldman Sachs and leadership roles across the energy sector. His elevation comes after overseeing negotiations that resulted in a significant private investment into London Spirit, marking one of the most high-profile financial deals linked to English cricket structures. Metherell said, "I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols. I have a long connection with MCC and I have many cherished memories at Lord's." Hundred deal and administrative transition Metherell led discussions during the 2025 Hundred equity sale, where a Silicon Valley-backed consortium acquired a 49 percent stake in London Spirit for approximately £145 million. The investment, led by Nikesh Arora, positioned the franchise as the highest-valued entity within the competition. Following the transaction, Metherell was appointed chair as ownership transitioned from the ECB to the new stakeholders in October 2025. The development has increased the franchise’s role within MCC’s broader decision-making framework, with structural and branding changes already introduced earlier this year. "This is a really exciting time to be involved with MCC, especially as it starts a new era of ownership of a professional cricket team and I am looking forward to driving forward both the Club and London Spirit." His selection aligns with a period of organisational change, where commercial interests and traditional structures are being integrated. Smith said, "During such an exciting period for MCC, I wanted to choose a successor with huge expertise and experience, combined with a deep passion for the game and for the club." "Julian Metherell is a great and trusted friend to cricket and an exceptional candidate. It is with enormous pleasure that I nominate him as the President of MCC from 1 October 2026." During his tenure, Lord’s is scheduled to host matches involving Australia’s men’s and women’s teams in the 2027 Ashes series, placing the incoming presidency within a defined international calendar.
