India's young left-handed Sai Sudharsan had a forgettable first Test outing, getting out for a four-ball duck on his debut against England at Headingley. The dismissal occurred near lunch time on Day 1 of the opening Test, after India had begun cautiously but promisingly. The lead-up to his dismissal was a demonstration of England's careful planning, spearheaded by the tactics of Ben Stokes. A sequence of leg-stump balls and intelligent field placements was the precursor to what was yet to happen. And when the time was right, Sudharsan marched into the trap, with India surrendering at 92/2 going into the interval. With the ball seaming and dancing with variable bounce on overcast conditions, England's skipper Stokes perceived a chance. With the knowledge that debutants desire to get to their first run as soon as possible, Stokes used a leg-stump line and packed the leg-side. A leg slip, short fine leg, and later a leg gully were employed, rare but intentional. Stokes bowled full and angled in toward the body on the fourth ball to Sudharsan. Left-hander, trying a contained look to get away, ended up being given the merest tickle. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, agile and watchful, dived hard to his right and took a magnificent catch with both hands. It was a textbook 'strangle,' not out a wild stroke, but a carefully planned trap functioning flawlessly. As he trudged off with an empty scorecard and his head down, it was not only the end of a brief sojourn, but the start of a learning curve in red-ball cricket. The wicket shifted the momentum slightly back in England’s favour, just when India looked set for a solid opening session. India were 92/2 at Lunch on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley, after being asked to bat under cloudy conditions. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul settled down with a serene 91-run partnership, batting in a disciplined and clear manner against a testing English pace attack. Jaiswal was not out on 42 off 74 balls, hitting eight solid boundaries and appearing confident at the wicket. Rahul also seemed to be fluent for his 42 before getting out to Brydon Carse in the 25th over, edging a length ball to Joe Root in the slips. Debutant Sai Sudharsan walked in just a delivery later, only to get out for a duck four balls into his Test life. Stokes had played him out with a clever leg-side trap, strangling him down leg, caught perfectly by keeper Jamie Smith. Watch the reactions here: Duck on Test debut for Sai.
