Cricket Australia (CA) has introduced a new and exciting rule for fans that will change how they experience matches in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Inspired by baseball’s famous ‘fan catch’ tradition, this rule will let fans keep the ball if it lands in the stands, but only during the first over of each innings. A Special Treat for the Fans It has long been the dream of every cricket fan to catch a ball in the stand and take it home for keeps. Well, that has now become a reality. Under the new rule, called the ‘Westpac Keep the Ball’ initiative, fans who manage to grab a six-hit ball during the first over will be allowed to keep it. Backed by CA's banking partner Westpac, the initiative is part of a push to make the game more interactive and fan friendly. A specially branded Westpac ball will be used to start every innings, with spare balls handy to minimize delays in play. CA's executive general manager Alistair Dobson expressed his excitement for the new move. "Player connection drives the Big Bash Leagues, and this initiative shows our commitment to fan-focused innovation. We want to give fans a unique and unforgettable experience, "said Dobson. Every time a batter smashes a six, fans will cheer for the runs and hope to catch the ball themselves. Cricket Australia hopes the new rule deepens the connection of its players with its fans and makes the BBL and WBBL more enjoyable. The idea emulates a rich tradition in baseball where catching a ball hit into the stands is one of the most treasured moments for fans. The new WBBL season gets underway on November 9, with the BBL starting on December 14. This new rule just adds to that level of excitement as fans will get ready to take home a piece of the actual game.
