In the crucial game between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai last night, an incident occurred which was a rare one. The home side was awarded a rare no-ball due to a huge error in their field placement. This happened on the third ball of the fifth over of the DC's chase. MI's all-rounder Will Jacks was brought into the attack to tackle the southpaws of DC. Jacks was bowling the third ball of the over when umpires immediately noticed that there was a fielding mistake done by MI captain Hardik Pandya. Mumbai Indians had kept only three fielders at the off-side and all of them were within the 30-yard circle. Meanwhile, they kept six fielders on the leg-side, which violated the fielding laws. Why Was a No-Ball Given? As per the IPL rules, a maximum of five fielders can be placed on the leg-side by the team. In addition, a maximum of two fielders (except the wicketkeeper) can stand behind the popping crease on the on-side at the moment when the ball is bowled. According to section 28.4 of the playing conditions of the IPL: "At the instant of delivery, there may not be more than 5 fielders on the on side," says section 28.4.1. "At the instant of the bowler’s delivery there shall not be more than two fielders, other than the wicket-keeper, behind the popping crease on the on side. A fielder will be considered to be behind the popping crease unless the whole of his person whether grounded or in the air is in front of this line," says section 28.4.2. These were the cases which were taken into consideration by the umpires. The umpires immediately declared the delivery as a no-ball, which cost MI runs because Vipraj Nigam dispatched the free-hit for a six and then drove two further boundaries off the subsequent balls. Although Mumbai Indians gave away few runs as a result of this error, it did not come back to bite them. Hardik Pandya and Co. won the game by a decent margin of 59 runs and 10 balls to spare. With this win, they became the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs of IPL 2025 and with one game to go, they will eye the top two spot.
