In the wake of the demise of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) postponed two matches slated for December 30 in observance of the national mourning period. The following two matches were suspended: Sylhet Titans versus Chattogram Royals Dhaka Capitals versus Rangpur Riders The announcement was released rather soon after the official confirmation of Khaleda Zia's passing at 6:00 am, local time, on Tuesday. BCB Issues Official Statement This incident led to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) putting out an official statement declaring the voiding of that day's matches. The board said the matches would be ruled anew, dates to be revealed later. "The BCB recalls with gratitude her constant blessing and good wishes for the progress of cricket in this country," the statement had said. And in its course, she has been more memorable at the prime ministerial stand by quoting her in ways that crumbled or understressed sound cricket infrastructure across the country. Contribution of Khaleda Zia to Bangladesh Cricket Between 1991 and 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006, Khaleda Zia supported sports, including cricket, during the two periods she served as prime minister. Under her leadership, the facilities in Bangladesh improved with respect to stadiums, cricket administration, etc. Her motivation helped create conditions conducive to Bangladesh’s advancement in international cricket that led to major achievements worldwide eventually. Khaleda Zia was the first female prime minister of Bangladesh, as well as one of the most powerful political leaders of the country in its history. She was the wife of Ziaur Rahman, the former president of Bangladesh, who was assassinated in 1981. After the demise of her husband, she went into politics and became chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1984. For decades thereafter, she became one of the most important figures in Bangladeshi politics and remained a long-time rival of Sheikh Hasina. Impact on the Current BPL Season Commencing on December 26, the current season of BPL has rolled out with six matches so far. Rajshahi Warriors lead the points table, having won two matches out of three encounters. Both teams, the Rangpur Riders and the Dhaka Capitals, have played just one match each, while the other participant in this league is the Noakhali Express which is still searching for its first victory this season. Postponements are anticipated not to have major implications on the general tournament timetable since the BCB is believed to announce new date schedules soon.
