Team India is gearing up for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) that will be played on 26th December 2024. This will be the fourth Test of the series and with one more Test to go after this at SCG, India is still in the hunt of World Test Championship Final (WTC) which will be played at Lords in June 2025. Currently, the Rohit Sharma-Led Indian side is placed at the third position in the points table of WTC 2023-25 cycle. They have two Tests left in this cycle and if they manage to win both, they'll find themself in the final at the Lords for the third consecutive time. If India wins both the remaining matches of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, they will guarantee their spot in the final as their PCT% will rise to 60.53, which would not be possible for Australia to surpass even if they sweep the series against Sri Lanka in 2025 ahead of the Final. South Africa is topping the table of WTC 2023-25 cycle with the PCT% of 63.33 and their chances of entering into the final seems more likely. However, a 0-2 defeat for Proteas against Pakistan at the own backyard will be a huge blow for them as it will reduce their chances of playing the Final. If this happens, the PCT% of South Africa will drop down to 52.78 at max, and this would plausibly not be enough to qualify. However, this would boost up the qualification chances of Indian team as they would only need one win of the two remaining Tests against Australia to finish above the Proteas in the points table. If India wins one and losses one Test against Australia, they will end up with the PCT% of 55.26. Moreover, if Pakistan sweeps South Africa and if the Pat Cummins' men beat Sri Lanka 2-0, then the PCT% of South Africa won't get above 52.78, while the same for Australia would be 57.01 at least. These scenarios would bring India and Australia once again into the final at the Lords in 2025.
