The Indian men's cricket team is at the No. 1 position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table with 61.11 PCT%. India moved past Australia (57.69 PCT%) after defeating the Baggy Greens by 295 runs in the first Test of the five-match series at Optus Stadium in Perth. India's Path to the WTC Final India needs to win three of the remaining four matches in this series against Australia in order to finish top two and book its third successive qualification for the WTC final. India has lost finals of the 2021 and 2023 WTC. Recently, India lost 0-3 at home to New Zealand in this cycle. Their hope to make it to the 2025 final now has a dent. Yet, they are still in with a good chance after winning their first Test against Australia at Perth. Other Test Series Impacting on India's Chances While India is looking to win at least three more matches in the series, qualification could also depend on how other series go: New Zealand vs England Series: England is already out of the run for the WTC 2025 final. Nevertheless, in case England wins the three-match series 3-0, 2-0, or 2-1, New Zealand's PCT% will come below 50%. Under such circumstances, India shall require only one more victory or two draws against Australia to be placed ahead of New Zealand. If they win the two-match series against South Africa 2-0, their PCT% will go up to 63.64. In that scenario, India will need at least two more wins to reach a top-two position. A 0-2 defeat to Sri Lanka will ensure South Africa's elimination. Even a whitewash against Pakistan in their next series, South Africa's PCT% will be no more than 52.78. If South Africa wins the series 2-0, then the PCT% of Sri Lanka will go down to 45.45 and South Africa's will go up to 63.33. In this case, Sri Lanka cannot end the series with more than 53.85 PCT%, even if they defeat Australia 2-0 the following year. A 1-1 draw between South Africa and Sri Lanka would leave Sri Lanka with 54.55 PCT% and South Africa with 53.33 PCT%, behind India, if India maintains their good performance. India's Qualification Scenarios It highly depends on India's performances against Australia in the remaining Tests and New Zealand against England, along with how South Africa goes against Sri Lanka. Provided that these outcomes go India's way with the necessary mix of favorable results, the chances of the side getting through to WTC 2025 might well look promising.
