Former cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara believes that India pacer Mohammed Shami deserves some clarity from the team selectors about his future. The BCCI has raised concerns about fitness and workload, and Shami hasn’t played for India since the 2025 Champions Trophy. Pujara thinks it’s important for Shami to know if he’s still in the plans for the future or if chief selector Ajit Agarkar is looking to focus on younger players like Harshit Rana or Prasidh Krishna. Here is what stated Pujara, as quoted by India Today: “Someone like Mohammed Shami should be having – I mean, the selectors and the team management should have a very honest conversation with him. What’s the plan going forward? Whether they want to pick him or whether they are looking at the young players," Reiterating his point, Shami's former teammate emphasized that if the team management clearly states they don’t intend to include Shami for any reason, he can then make informed decisions about his cricketing career and beyond. The Rajkot-born player wants the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to have an open and honest conversation with the Bengal cricketer. “If he is being informed that they are not looking at him, then it is always Shami’s personal call whether he wants to carry on playing First-Class cricket, whether he still wants to – I mean, he is part of the IPL as well. He would want to carry on playing cricket. The communication from the team management has to be very, very clear and it should be a very honest conversation and Shami should be part of it,” he added. So far, he has bowled 93 overs and taken 15 wickets in five innings, boasting a strike rate of 37.20 and an economy of 2.50. Bengal currently tops the points table after four rounds of the tournament, and Shami has played a significant role in that success. When it comes to Test cricket, the right-arm pacer’s last appearance for India was in the final of the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle. Despite overcoming several injury challenges, he hasn’t been part of the red-ball squad for quite a while. Shami’s consistent performances for Bengal demonstrate that he still possesses the skill and fitness to compete at the highest level. Former teammates and experts are calling for clear communication from the selectors so Shami can plan his future, whether that means continuing with India or exploring other opportunities in cricket.
