Veteran New Zealand allrounder Craig McMillan has identified one area that Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has to focus on for the new World Test Championship cycle, the lack of a proper fast-bowling allrounder. India toured England recently, but the pair of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur failed to make a big difference in the series. McMillan feels that although India is adequately prepared with spin-bowling allrounders in the form of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar for Asian cricket, they do not have the fast-bowling allrounder for tours in England, New Zealand, and Australia. While interacting with TOI, McMillan said: "In Asian conditions, you need a spin-bowling allrounder like Jadeja, Washington or previously R Ashwin. In New Zealand, Australia and England, you need a fast-bowling allrounder. It is where India is missing a player like Hardik Pandya, who can bowl medium pace and bat lower down the order." He has played a total of 11 Tests, making 532 runs at an average of 31 with a single century. With the ball, he has picked up 17 wickets, the best of which was 5/28. McMillan pointed out that Pandya's contribution with bat and ball was something India desperately lacked in foreign tours. In the absence of such a player, the team tends to face difficulty in establishing the right balance in difficult seaming conditions. McMillan on Shubman Gill's Captaincy Besides his discussion on allrounders, McMillan also addressed Shubman Gill's captaincy in the England series. "He looks like a good captain. The first series is very tough. In such a pressure-cooked series, he probably made a few mistakes. But you expect those in his first series. He will get better with experience. He is the future, so India will invest in him. He will get to know his team's game, which I think is really important, and the style of play." With Gambhir as captain and young leaders such as Gill getting experience, McMillan thinks India has the proper foundation. But to be successful during the subsequent WTC cycle, a consistent fast-bowling allrounder might be the missing piece of the puzzle.
