Former Sri Lanka off-spinner and ex-Kolkata Knight Riders player Sachithra Senanayake has been formally indicted in a high-profile match-fixing case in Colombo, according to a report by NDTV. The development comes months after Senanayake was arrested in September 2023 and later released on bail. The Colombo High Court reportedly served indictments against Senanayake under the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act, marking the first such case under this new legislation in Sri Lanka. The former cricketer is accused of attempting to corrupt two players during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL), a charge he has consistently denied. The 39-year-old was allegedly involved in unethical approaches made to other players with the intent of fixing games. The accusations first surfaced when the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigation Unit filed a report last year, prompting his arrest. The Attorney General’s Department informed the High Court that there was sufficient evidence to prosecute Senanayake under anti-corruption laws. If convicted, he could face heavy penalties, including imprisonment.
