Sanjay Bangar, the former batting coach of India, believes that Virat Kohli could have led the Test team for a longer period. Kohli had stepped down from Test captaincy in January 2022 after India lost the final Test of the series to South Africa, which the Proteas won 2-1. Under Kohli's captaincy, in seven years, the Indian team had risen to great heights, including their first-ever series Test win on Australian soil in 2018-19. His aggressive brand of cricket has made India a force to reckon with in the longest format of the game. Bangar, who closely observed Kohli’s journey as both captain and player, believes that Kohli could have continued leading the team. However, he acknowledges that the pressure of captaincy affected Kohli's individual performance. Bangar said on The Rao Podcast. "Captaincy of the Indian team is a 24/7 job. Lot of on and off the field things happen like selection, non-selection and team performance. So, it does take a toll (on individual performances). Him giving up captaincy at that time means he is now playing with lesser responsibilities. Even though I personally feel he could have continued a bit longer as Test captain," Bangar remembered a time when Kohli wasn’t scoring double centuries in Tests and admitted he couldn't help him achieve that. He added that after making some small adjustments, Kohli went on to score five double centuries in a single season. He added, "It is humanly impossible to sustain at the level at which he was playing between 2014 and 2019. The dip had to come. When you play with that sort of passion he was scoring daddy hundreds. But he told me that he wasn't scoring a double hundred. After a while he realised that there is a process to which he can make double hundreds and once he tasted that he made four or five in one season," Also Read | Who Has Bangladesh Beaten in Test Cricket?
