BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as the captain of Indian men's cricket team after Rohit Sharma's surprise retirement in Tests. The team is at present being guided by the former India batsman Gautam Gambhir and there is much uncertainty between the fans and pundits alike as to who is really leading in the dressing room. One-Test attacking all-rounder Irfan Pathan has recently provided the answer, examining the present scenario in the Indian set-up. Pathan states that the BCCI must ask for proper communication in their path ahead with Gambhir and Gill as the leaders of the affairs. Baroda-born believes that whoever becomes the person leading, it is important that all know who the engine of the train is, i.e., who actually is leading the team forward. Pathan also believes that Gill still has a lot to learn as captain of India but what he has accomplished in his very first task has been impressive. Here is what the cricketer-turned-commentator told RevSportz: “I think the message should go out loud and clear to every player – more than the media or the fans – that who the engine of this train is, so that the train reaches a single destination, no matter the speed. Shubman Gill’s captaincy will get better with time, he’ll learn the art of leadership more, but what he already has done is great,” “The selection committee had a discussion with him, that as soon as he gets free from Test cricket, you will get yourself back. There are a lot of questions in the media, I understand, but Indian cricket goes according to a plan and that’s how it has always been. Selection board, management has the responsibility and I think that going in one direction is important. And this is what it seems like Indian cricket is doing with Shubman Gill right now,” Pathan added. Talking about Gill's captaincy, he is likely to return to work during the home two-match Test series against the West Indies. India will host the West Indies in a red-ball series, starting with the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 2. The series will also be Shubman Gill's first home assignment as India's Test captain.
