England Test captain Ben Stokes has spoken about the scary extent to which a recent face injury he picked up at the beginning of the year could have easily been more serious and ended his career. The all-rounder revealed he felt "lucky" not to have caught the ball in a more dangerous area. Ben Stokes, England's Test skipper, What injury did he sustain? The injury occurred during an indoor net session in Durham during the first week of February when the all-rounder failed to look at a ball that hit the right side of his face when he was standing on the side. It resulted in a swollen black eye, a nasty gash on his cheek and a bloodied nose, which was later shared by the England captain himself on social media The ECB official Stokes told England Cricket: "It was a pretty scary situation," "I copped one straight in the face. Just a couple of inches one way or the other, I might not be here doing this interview if I didn't turn my head round. It was a bit of a mess under here [the cheekbone]. I've got out quite lucky. Thankfully still here and everything's all right." The 32-year-old England captain made sure to clear up that despite the look of the incident (which sent many of his fans into a bit of an uproar) he felt he actually got quite lucky that the damage wasn't much more severe. Stokes Speaks on Bazball Approach "So much has been said about style and manner - are we going to change or do this?" said Stokes. "I don't want people to think we all need to be playing this one mode. Whoever it may be, go out and play how you play. The version of yourself that got you into the position to (represent) England in the first place should be the version you carry on doing. That is a pretty clear message - you do you." Stokes is expected to return to action in the next few weeks, with England's Test series against New Zealand scheduled to commence on June 4th, and has been tipped to play at least three county matches, possibly more, along with potentially appearing in England Lions fixtures.
