Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that the Test series in England will play a decisive role in determining Gautam Gambhir’s future. The underwhelming performances of Indian players since the ODI against Sri Lanka have lit up the fire against the head coach, Gautam Gambhir, but then became a wildfire after the woes in the last Border Gavaskar Trophy. When stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli got warnings for captanincy and batting form, Gambhir likely got a cool. A few BCCI officials reportedly suggested players failures can't judge a coach's credibility. Despite that, Gautam Gambhir’s position as India’s head coach in the Tests has also become a topic of debate for fans and critics. Notably, Gambhir assumed the role of head coach following Rahul Dravid’s departure after India’s T20 World Cup win. With the ICC Champions Trophy being India’s next significant challenge, speculation is rife that a poor campaign could jeopardize Gambhir’s role. Regarding this, akash Chopra shared his views on his YouTube channel, saying, “The England tour will be critical. It will mark one year of Gambhir’s tenure, and the BCCI is likely to evaluate how he has managed the transition, the players he prepared, and the team’s overall performance." Adding to that, he said reviewing the coach is as essential as assessing players. Chopra explained, “One year is crucial to judge a coach’s impact. If India falters in both the Champions Trophy and the England series, the BCCI might consider a change. You review batters and bowlers, so why not the coach? Gambhir was tasked with ensuring transition within a year. The Champions Trophy may not be the ultimate test, but the England tour could be the defining moment.” With mounting pressure on Gambhir and India’s veteran players, the upcoming months promise to be pivotal for Indian cricket’s leadership and strategy.
