The Test series between India and England, which begins on June 20 in Leeds, will now be termed the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. Many fans were agitated by this alteration since the series played in England has been termed the Pataudi Trophy since 2007 in honor of the late Indian captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. The Pataudi Trophy was instituted to commemorate 75 years when India first hosted a Test against England. When the series is hosted in India, it is known as the Anthony de Mello Trophy, named after a past BCCI president. BCCI Responds to Fan Backlash Following the name change announcement, numerous cricket enthusiasts and experts voiced their outrage. At this, the BCCI requested the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to rename one of the awards given after the match in honor of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi to preserve his memory. The BCCI has no role in it as it's their home series. We have requested them to name one of the post match Trophy on Pataudi and they will revert to us." This is not the first renaming of a series. In 2020, the Wisden Trophy between England and West Indies was renamed the Richards-Botham Trophy, in tribute to legends Viv Richards and Ian Botham. The Pataudi Trophy was unique since Pataudi contributed immensely to Indian cricket. He was appointed captain at 21 and played 46 Tests, amassing 2793 runs with 6 centuries. His best score was 203 not out. His dad, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, also played Test cricket for England and India. This series also brings a significant shift in Indian cricket. Shubman Gill will take over as the new Test captain since Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have both retired from Test cricket.
