India finished Day 1 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston on a firm footing despite some hiccups. After being made to bat first, India were in early trouble but recovered well due to a fine century by Shubman Gill. England began the day in red-hot fashion with Chris Woakes sending down a scorching opening spell. He bowled four maidens in his first five overs and got rid of the settled KL Rahul. His control and swing initiated the tone for England. But Jaiswal and Karun Nair launched a fightback, hitting regular boundaries and relieving pressure from India. At the fag end of lunch, Brydon Carse got rid of Karun Nair with a well-placed short ball, giving England that little bit of an advantage heading into the interval. He constructed a vital 66-run partnership with skipper Shubman Gill for the third wicket. But after having batted very few balls in a brief period of time, Jaiswal lost focus and was out for 87, edging a loose ball played by Stokes to the keeper. Rishabh Pant and Gill then repaired another significant stand. Pant attempted to take on off-spinner Shoaib Bashir but was caught at long-on for 25. Shortly thereafter, Nitish Reddy was bowled by Woakes after shoulder-arming an incoming ball. With India stuck in a difficult position, Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill dug deep. Gill, especially, was in vintage form, playing positive cricket and using his feet admirably. He scored his 7th Test ton and became the first Indian to score two hundreds on Day 1 of a Test in England. India closed the day above the 300-run mark, paving the way for a intriguing second day.
