All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's stunning knock was cut short by just 11 runs from what would have been his fifth Test hundred, as England secured a long-awaited breakthrough before Lunch on Day 2 of the second Test at Edgbaston. Having begun the day on 41, Jadeja charged at England bowlers, along with Shubman Gill, in a key 203-run partnership for the sixth wicket. The southpaw lifted his fifty off 80 balls with a paddle off his pads. He was looking quite comfortable at the crease and even clubbed Shoaib Bashir for a massive straight six in the morning to indicate. Yet, it was an unexpected bouncer from Josh Tongue that eventually brought his innings to an end. Coming from around the wicket, Tongue delivered a short one perfectly which caught Jadeja by surprise. The left-armer, attempting to shoo it away while leaping in the crease, could only glove it to keeper Jamie Smith. Jadeja returned for 89 from 137 balls, laced with 10 boundaries and a six. He reached his best Test score, overtaking 150 with consecutive boundaries. The batter has played the anchor game to perfection and ensured that he kept the scoreboard ticket. At lunch, he is unbeaten on 168 and is getting closer to a maiden Test double hundred. At the same time, India, who began the day on 310/5, have now advanced to 419/6, courtesy primarily of the Gill-Jadeja partnership. Though the visitors are well placed, they would be concerned about the collapse of the lower order that cost them dearly in the first Test. Having only Washington Sundar remaining at the crease and the tail to come, India would be keen to prevent a Headingley repeat when the last five wickets went for nothing. England would welcome Jadeja's dismissal and will now look to get through the tail in a hurry, praying to get India below 500.
