As India suffered a dramatic loss at Lord's in the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, losing all their wickets for 170 while chasing a modest 193, calls within the cricket fraternity became louder for Shreyas Iyer's return to the Test team. With India's legendary middle order in transition after the retirements of greats, most supporters and past players are calling for selectors to rethink the exclusion of Iyer, whose recent form in domestic cricket has strengthened his claim no further. He is exactly the Travis Head kind of player who will make the game move forward quickly. This is what was required yesterday. — Kanav Jain (@FCBKanav) July 15, 2025 Shreyas Iyer can play 10x better than Karun Nair but Gautam Gambhir will never select him because of his ego. pic.twitter.com/dIAUDVkkmj — Selflessβ΄β΅ (@SelflessCricket) July 14, 2025 The lessons this match taught us:- Rohit Sharma intent was hated for absolutely no reason.- Jadeja is a fighter.- Bring Shreyas Iyer In Place Of Nair.- Bumrah Is Batter Batsman Than Gill on Tough Pitches.- Sack Gautam Gambhir. pic.twitter.com/DFFBQNuEou — ππ¨π ππ§π¬ππ§π (@jod_insane) July 14, 2025 It's very shameful BCCI didn't selected a clutch player like Shreyas Iyer . He doesn't look like a leader in the field. A great batsman doesn't make a great leader. Also Gill should take responsibility and bat at 3.#ShubhmanGill#Gill#INDvsENG #INDvsENGTest pic.twitter.com/zhIhhv1IxR — Ritik Pratap Singh Patel (@patelritiq) July 15, 2025 8/8My frustration- Why ain't Shreyas Iyer in the team after performing so well everywhere. He could've played everywhere. He could be our no 4 in all formats but favourism and politics is holding indian cricket down. Gill should bat 3.#Selectors#Agarkar#ShreyasIyer#INDvsENG pic.twitter.com/CWC8lCu1UQ — Ritik Pratap Singh Patel (@patelritiq) July 15, 2025 Read also: Boland’s Pink-Ball Hat-Trick as WI Collapse for 27 Since being left out of the Test team, Iyer has spoken through his bat in India's domestic red-ball competition. Having lost his spot in the national team back in early 2024 and temporarily lost his BCCI central contract, Iyer staged a strong comeback. He put in quality performances in all formats, but it was his Ranji Trophy record that spoke volumes the 30-year-old scored an average of 68.57 in five games in the 2024-25 season, leading the team from the front as both a batter and a skipper. This revival wasn't missed by cricket greats. Virender Sehwag, former India opener, also made the logic for leaving out Iyer public knowledge, highlighting the fact that a batsman in such good touch is bound to thrive at the international level, particularly under the heat of a Test series in England. For most, Iyer's pressure-absorbing ability, strike rotation, and counter-attacking skills made him a suitable choice for the new Indian middle-order Think-tank Significantly, Iyer's performances were not only important in white-ball competitions where he was part of India's Champions Trophy campaign but also in proving his reputation and contract with BCCI. Irrespective of injuries and a spell of poor form in 2023 that saw his average for Tests reduce, the Mumbai batter's performances in domestic cricket have again sparked controversy over his rightful position in the team.
