India's fifth and last Test against England at The Oval may see left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh play his possible Test debut. With the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy being 1-2 down, the management is likely to do some fine-tuning in the bowling unit, particularly with Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested for workload reasons. The 25-year-old was initially in the frame for a debut in the fourth Test against Manchester. An untimely thumb injury sustained during a practice session in Beckenham kept him out of contention for that match. Now having recovered fully after stitches and weeks of rehabilitation, he bowled at full intensity during an optional net session in preparation for the last Test. The team management, as per the report by TOI, had thought of giving Arshdeep opportunities in the final two Tests. With Bumrah to be rested and worries over Mohammed Siraj getting fatigued, Arshdeep might provide the balance for the bowling attack. His childhood mentor Jaswant Rai also supported him for the red-ball debut. Though he has been successful in T20 cricket, Arshdeep has always dreamed of playing Test cricket. The left-armed bowler has been training intensively with bowling coach Morne Morkel for the past month to improve his red-ball craft. Besides Arshdeep, Siraj, and Akash Deep will be the other seamers in the team. A call on Bumrah will most probably be made nearer to match day. There is also a chance that Kuldeep Yadav could come in for Shardul Thakur, providing a wrist-spinning option. With the series hanging in the balance, the Oval Test will be an opportunity for the visitors to draw the series.
