Mohammed Shami’s prospects of returning to the Indian cricket team appear increasingly remote, according to reports. The pacer, who turned 35 last month, was overlooked for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Sources indicate that Shami’s recent domestic performances have failed to impress selectors, diminishing his chances of a national recall. Shami last represented India in March 2025 during the Champions Trophy. Since then, injuries and inconsistent outings in domestic cricket have limited his opportunities to showcase form. Speaking to the Telegraph, a BCCI official said, “At this moment, it's getting increasingly tougher for Shami to return to the Indian team. In the Duleep game too, he wasn't too impressive, barring one odd spell. Besides, he isn't getting any younger, while pace-wise, too, he didn't seem to be at his best in Duleep. But to continue in the IPL, he has to play a decent amount of domestic games." The veteran bowler has committed to Bengal’s Ranji Trophy campaign. Bengal’s season begins against Uttarakhand on October 15, and Shami has confirmed his availability. So, on our front, we're optimistic as far as his availability (in the Ranji opener) is concerned.” However, no final squad announcement has been made. A Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official noted that discussions with Shukla will determine inclusion. The official said, “We'll sit with Laxmi and discuss all the related aspects most likely on Tuesday." Shami’s situation highlights a transition phase for the pacer, who now focuses on domestic cricket while national opportunities wane. His performance in Ranji will likely influence IPL prospects but offers little indication of an imminent India comeback.
