Eden Gardens, in Kolkata, has been put on high alert ahead of the first Test match between India and South Africa which gets underway on November 14, after a suspected terror attack in Delhi. A car explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening killed at least eight people and injured several more in the tragic incident. Though investigations to confirm whether it was an accident or a planned attack are still underway, the major Indian cities have strengthened their security arrangements. Kolkata Police Tighten Security Around Eden Gardens The Kolkata Police have stepped up security measures around Eden Gardens and other important buildings near the ground following the Delhi blast. A senior police official told IANS: "We are on high alert. Special and additional security arrangements are being made." Local police will be supported in the maintenance of law and order during the match by the Special Task Force. Areas surrounding key government offices like the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Raj Bhavan, Calcutta High Court and All India Radio are also being kept under tight vigil. Hotels where both the Indian and South African teams are staying have been placed under extra surveillance. Additionally, security officials are reviewing the planned movements of the Indian players. Reports say head coach Gautam Gambhir's proposed visit to the Kalighat temple may be postponed because of the heightened alert. Fans entering the venue will go through stringent checks with the help of metal detectors and hand-held scanners. Plainclothes officers will also be deployed inside and around the stadium to detect any suspicious activity. Entry of bags and restricted items will not be allowed. Meanwhile, the Cricket Association of Bengal will meet senior police officers on Tuesday to finalise arrangements for crowd management and safety ahead of the five-day Test match, scheduled from November 14 to 19. With India gearing up to play South Africa, player and spectator safety is of utmost priority.
