Former Indian captain and Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday in connection with a money laundering case linked to alleged financial irregularities in the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), according to official sources. The ED is investigating the anomalies in the investigation under PMLA. He will be questioned in connection with his role when he was the president of HCA in that stint, according to the sources. His statement will also be recorded in the course of an ongoing probe, the sources said. Azharuddin, 61, was issued summons to report himself at the ED office on Fateh Maidan Road on October 3. He however requested a re-date and was finally summoned for questioning on October 8. In this connection, the ED had already conducted searches in November last year. His scrutinization is related to the period when he was the president of HCA. The cricketing legend has remained silent on the developments thus far, but he had rubbished the allegations against him earlier. After the Telangana police had filed the case last year, he said claims were "false" and "motivated" and an attempt by his rivals to tarnish his reputation.
