Sri Lanka lost to England by 51 runs at Pallekele during the Super 8 round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The match result disappointed the co-hosts but what became highlight of the game was Dushan Hemantha's hit wicket dismissal during the run chase. Sri Lanka began their 147-run chase but they lost their batting strength and got all out for 95 runs in 16.4 overs. The team collapse resulted in a historic T20 World Cup defeat, while Hemantha became the first Sri Lankan player to get out hit wicket in the history of T20 World Cups. The incident happened on the sixth ball of the 12th over. Jamie Overton bowled a short delivery to Hemantha to which he attempted to play the shot. However, the ball rolled away from his thigh pad. His bat made a contact with the stumps during the follow-through which took the bails off. There was complete silence in the stadium after the dismissal. Hemantha walked back after scoring 5 runs off 8 balls. With that, he also became only the sixth batter overall to be dismissed hit wicket in T20 World Cup history.
