Former England pacer Stuart Broad has roundly condemned the Dukes ball makers following an uproar on Day 2 of the third Test between India and England. The game played on Friday, July 11, witnessed the ball being changed twice in the first session, infuriating the players and creating serious questions about the ball's quality. In the first hour of play, Indian skipper Shubman Gill realized that the ball was not behaving well. He requested the umpires to inspect the ball. The umpires used the gauge and realized that the ball had to be changed. This was the second new ball, which only survived for 10.4 overs before being changed. When the new ball was introduced, Gill and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj were evidently displeased with it. Gill could be seen talking to umpire Sharfuddoula, whereas Siraj could be seen ridiculing the quality of the ball before the game resumed. Amazingly enough, even the new ball had to be replaced again later in the same session. He stated the ball should be like a good wicketkeeper, going about its work without fanfare and not gaining attention. He further opined that the Dukes ball is fast becoming a serious problem, being changed almost every time an innings is being played. Broad stated bluntly that a good ball should last at least 80 overs, rather than 10. Here what Broad wrote: "The cricket ball should be like a fine wicket keeper. Barely noticed. We are having to talk about the ball too much because it is such an issue & being changed virtually every innings. Unacceptable. Feels like it’s been 5 years now. Dukes have a problem. They need to fix it. A ball should last 80 overs. Not 10." The cricket ball should be like a fine wicket keeper. Barely noticed. During the first Test, Rishabh Pant was fined for expressing his frustration at the umpires regarding the ball. Post the second Test at Edgbaston, even Gill publicly criticized the ball. All this notwithstanding, the manufacturers of the Dukes ball defended their product and stated that they stand behind the quality of the ball.
