India were defeated by England in the third Test of the five-match contest narrowly by 22 runs as the tourists threw away a few runs while playing the third innings at the Lord's. One such reason was that they failed to continue the pressure on the opposition, and allowing them to play freely, which helped the Ben Stokes-led team to put up a small, but a defendable target of 193 on the board. India's batting was a failure in the fourth innings to put it mildly, with no one except Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul looking serene enough in the middle. Support came from all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, but he could not linger long enough. Though he managed three crucial wickets in the game, his batting performances have been questioned, and icon Dilip Vengsarkar has called for his exclusion from the next match. Rather, the ex-cricketer has opined that the Indian team must go with the likes of Arshdeep Singh, who offers as much expertise with the ball as anyone. Vengsarkar also questioned the role of Washington Sundar, and stated, only specialist bowlers must be selected, wherein someone like left-arm orthodox spinner Kuldeep Yadav filled his bills. Here is what Vengsarkar said via RevSportz “I would drop Nitish Kumar Reddy and perhaps one more player to make room for Arshdeep [Singh]. I think Siraj and Bumrah should keep their places, but Reddy could make way. Kuldeep Yadav could also replace someone like Washington Sundar. You need five bowlers in a Test match to win it. If your six batters can’t put up a good total, the bowlers need to take responsibility. You can’t win a Test match with part-time bowlers,” “I would pick Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. Arshdeep is a good left-arm bowler who can move the ball in the air and off the wicket, which is crucial in English conditions. He can also reverse swing the ball, which is important. I have seen him bowl,” Also Read | Who Introduced the Bowler's Salute After a Five-Wicket Haul in Cricket? Vengsarkar Backs Nair for Another Chance The 69-year-old also took a strong view on keeping comeback man Karun Nair for the next game, as he has been promising, but has not been able to turn his starts into big scores that ultimately contribute to the team's cause. Vengsarkar has opined on giving another chance for the triple centurion to again prove himself, and has also wished for a century from him in the next game. The following match is going to take place at Manchester's Old Trafford, and at least a couple of changes are going to be made in the side led by Shubman Gill. The match will start on July 23, and in case India lose this match, they are going to have to walk away with a series defeat, which would not be beneficial for their campaign for a berth in the World Test Championship final in 2027.
