The Lok Sabha recently approved the Online Gaming Bill 2025, banning financial transactions on online gaming platforms. While esports and social gaming remain encouraged, gambling or money-based games will face strict restrictions. The bill, outlined by Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, categorizes online gaming into esports, social games, and money gaming. Although esports and social games are promoted as safe avenues for youth engagement, money-based games have caused severe financial and mental distress, reportedly linked to 32 suicides in the past 31 months. Under the new law, all real-money gaming apps, including poker, rummy, and fantasy cricket platforms, are banned. Banks cannot process such transactions, advertisements are prohibited, and violators face imprisonment of up to three years or fines reaching ₹1 crore. Not only that, all sorts of advertisements across any media are banned. If seen, the server will be jailed for three years or be imposed with a fine of INR 1 crore, while the advertiser will be paying INR 50 lakhs or be jailed for 2 years. Following the imposition of the Bill, BCCI's interim secretary Devajit Saikia said, “If it’s not permissible, we’ll not do anything. The BCCI will follow every policy of the country that is framed by the central government."
