Gujarat Titans defeated Delhi Capitals by seven wickets on Saturday at Narendra Modi Stadium. Despite GT's comfortable win over Delhi Capitals, former India batter Ambati Rayudu couldn’t help but raise eyebrows at the team’s strategy. The former Indian batter was baffled by the decision to bowl left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore for just one over in a day game where conditions seemed ideal for spin. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Rayudu said, “It was quite strange. Given the conditions, it was an afternoon game, you would expect the ball to grip a little bit, especially with the new ball when the seam is hard and slightly elevated.” Kishore, who has been among GT’s standout bowlers this season, was given the 20th over to bowl and responded by conceding just nine runs and dismissing Ashutosh Sharma. However, Rayudu felt that it was far too late in the innings to use a bowler of his quality. “He should have bowled at least one over in the powerplay and definitely through the middle. He’s been their best spinner so far; he’s been bowling better than Rashid in this competition. Doesn’t make sense to me,” Rayudu remarked. 'Spooked by match-ups' Former South Africa international Mark Boucher echoed Rayudu’s thoughts. The former MI head coach also pointed out GT’s overreliance on match-ups. According to him, the presence of left-hander Axar Patel from the fifth over seemed to spook the GT think-tank into holding Kishore back. “Spooked by match-ups and perhaps what’s happened before. I think the last time we saw him bowl, (he was) put under the pump, but it was Pooran. And that’s why we’re all scratching our heads, going ‘why didn’t he give him a go?’ Especially when three of your topline seamers are all going at more than ten runs an over,” Boucher said. He further stressed the importance of keeping Kishore’s confidence intact as the tournament progresses. “One of the biggest things as a spinner is the knowledge of your captain backing you in situations. There are certain times when, unfortunately, you’re going to have to bowl against a left-hander. And you get put under pressure.” Boucher urged GT skipper Shubman Gill to reassure Kishore going forward. “The one thing as a captain you can do is go to him and say, ‘listen, I know it’s a match-up you don’t enjoy but you’re actually bowling really well… you’re clever enough to bowl deliveries that are going to make it tough for him to hit.’” Despite the underuse, Sai Kishore has quietly emerged as one of the Gujarat Titans’ most effective performers this season. The left-arm spinner has claimed 11 wickets from just seven matches in IPL 2025, doing so while bowling only 20.5 overs.
