Virat Kohli has been the center of controversy regarding his aggressive demeanor against spinners for a while now. In recent performances, especially against leg-spinners, he has once again raised eyebrows. Since 2024, Kohli has averaged just 12.00 against leg-spinners, getting out six times in just seven innings. RCB spin-bowling coach Malolan Rangarajan backed Virat Kohli stating that the star batter never required any major changes to his technique for handling spin bowling better. Malolan described Kohli as a "genius" and rejected the idea that the former RCB skipper needs radical technical adjustments. He stated that Kohli's experience and natural ability to adapt during pressure situations are the key reasons behind the expected return. Otherwise, Kohli is uninterested in brute force. Instead, he plays by rhythm and technique against the pace by making best use of the bounce off the pitch and against spin by finding gaps very well. Over the years, he has nurtured these skills facing all forms of bowling. The opposition to his almost aggressive stance against spin, however, continues. From the years 2020 to 2023, Kohli really did not make his fans proud against spinners. In the middle overs of IPL, he had a 54+ average with quite a dismal strike rate. His impact was just scoring 105.8 runs per 100 balls. But ever since the Impact Player rule, everything about Kohli regarding playing spin transformed drastically. In the case of IPL 2024, today, he strikes at around 136 in the middle overs and averages about 56.2. Supporting this, RCB's spin coach gave him the award of being brilliant. Malolan commented on the awaya game against DC: “It wasn’t only Virat last season who was not batting at the desired strike rate. It was the whole team. So I think the whole team got together. And that’s precisely what happened. That’s part one.” While Virat Kohli was an immaculate batsman, it was left-arm spin and leg-spin that were once the Achilles heel of his batting. In IPL 2023, Kohli had a strike rate of 119.79 against left-arm spin; that has changed now. Coming into 2024, Kohli raised his strike rate to 131.19 and has taken it even further this season, boasting a superb 146.15. He added: “Part two is about Virat Kohli as the individual. He does not need to go and practise extra against left-arm spin and leg spin. He’s batted for 20-25 years. He’s a genius. He just has to decide what he wants to do and how he wants to take down a particular bowler. And it’s very evident that someone like Virat, even after having played for so long, he’s constantly looking at what more he can do. Which is, to me, unbelievable,” Most runs vs spin at IPL 2025 ft.
