West Indies, which used to be a competitive team in international cricket, is nowhere near being competitive now. It might be due to players getting attracted to the hefty amount offered by franchise cricket and now showing respect for their country. Former West Indies great Brian Lara feels the same, and now he has questioned the dignity of the players for their passion and commitment towards their country. West Indies’ recent struggles in international cricket have provoked many former greats to express their opinions. The former WI legendary player Brian Lara has now come forward to express that it might be because of a lack of funds and technological resources. Lara also questioned whether modern-day West Indies players truly value wearing the Maroon cap as much as the former great players did. Lara’s statement came from a perspective emphasising the constant challenges of funds; the mindset of players for more success should also improve. So that is a major part. But at the same time, I would like to urge Roston Chase and the other guys to, do they have cricket at heart? Do they really want to play for the West Indies? And that is the most important thing because you would find a way.” He further added: “I mean we did not have better facilities 30-40 years ago. Viv Richards didn't bat on any better practice pitches or anything. We had to do the same thing, the same grind; but the passion was different. The passion to play for the West Indies was different. So, I urge the young players to realise that this is a wonderful opportunity. And I am almost sure that every single one of their parents would have had in the back of their mind, their son playing for the West Indies, their son doing well for the West Indies because it meant a lot back in those days. So, I agree with [Chase on West Indies' struggles for finances], but I still believe there is an onus on each young player to create that love and desire to play for West Indies.” Lara’s comment came for players when the West Indies are going through a very critical phase. The side recently suffered two heavy defeats, 0-3 against Australia at their own home soil, sparking debates about their low standards in international cricket, and now they are on the verge of losing yet another Test series as they are already 0-1 behind against India. Their performance in white-ball cricket is not up to the mark; they were recently hammered by Nepal and lost the three-match T20I series 1-2. Amid this situation, Lara had urged the players and the West Indies cricket board to reintroduce the same culture that used to make the Caribbean team the most fearless team in the world of cricket.
