Former India wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik questioned whether India had erred in not selecting Varun Chakravarthy for the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy, which is going to take place soon. Dinesh's comments came immediately after Varun's impressive display in the T20I series against England as he took 3 wickets in the first match in Kolkata on January 22. India's squad for the Champions Trophy has four spinners, including Yadav who comes back from injury. All three other spinners namely Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar are finger spinners. Earlier, Karthik had suggested that the selectors should consider Varun before finalizing the squad. He argued that leaving Varun out would be a mistake, pointing to his excellent performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s top domestic 50-over competition. There were talks about the possibility of Varun being taken into the Champions Trophy squad that begins on February 19. However, the selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, decided on experience, taking the three finger spinners, besides Kuldeep. Since his comeback into T20I cricket, Varun has emerged as one of the top wicket-takers for India. He has managed to take 17 wickets in 7 matches, among which he claimed a five-wicket haul in 2024. In the series against England, Varun took 3 wickets in the first match while dismissing the big guns Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, and Jos Buttler that helped India keep England at 132 in 20 overs.
