Amidst ongoing controversies regarding Rohit Sharma's future in Indian cricket, former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengasarkar extended support, saying that Rohit must be given the freedom to decide his future. After the defeat in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, a lot of confusion arose regarding his captaincy. Even his form was a major concern, resulting in questions about his longevity as a player. However, the Champions Trophy win probably has relaxed the tensions. Speaking about Rohit Sharma's future, Vengsarkar has said the PTI that BCCI must grant him the liberty to decide his own future. Vengsarkar said, “I am not an astrologer. A lot of matches to go till the 2027 World Cup. A lot will depend on his form and fitness. It is not fair to say anything at this stage but he has been outstanding as both captain and player. I don't know why people speculated (on his retirement), it's unwarranted. A player of his stature should get to decide about his future." India has won the Champions Trophy title after an arduous 12-year wait, by defeating New Zealand. India who had been undefeated throughout, cleared the final rope, to become the champion. Notably, this was captain Rohit Sharma's second ICC title within nine months, with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 being the last one. And he is not wrong to say that. Rohit Sharma, who did not start great in the Champions Trophy and was even struggling in the ODI series against New Zealand, played a brilliant 76-run knock off 83 balls in the final. To be very honest, it set the tone of the chase, easing the job for the middle order batters. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, got in touch against Pakistan. He stood not out on 100, holding one side of the chase while the other batters contributed runs for the opposite side. Virat Kohli rose to power against Australia in the semifinal. Decent contributions from the middle order were articulated due to his 84 runs in that semifinal. Speaking about the Ro-Ko duo, Vengsarkar added, "The way he has been playing all this time is nothing short of exemplary. He has got three double hundreds in ODI. What more do I say about him. Guys like Virat and Rohit are big match players, bigger the platform the better the performance. It is very important from team's point of view. Their sheer presence is demoralising the opposition," said Vengsarkar, who is also a former chief selector who tracked both Rohit and Kohli in their early days." Meanwhile, amidst retirement rumors, none has taken the drastic step, and as per reports, Rohit Sharma is working on his fitness to continue till the 2027 ODI World Cup.
