We are almost one-third of the way through the league stage in IPL's 18th season and a look at the points table will tell you that it has not been your regular IPL this time around. Before we move further and dive deeper, let's first have a look at how the table looks at this stage - Points table after match 22 Top teams taking the scenic route this season!😳 pic.twitter.com/aFYGQYUFzS — CricketGully (@thecricketgully) April 9, 2025 For years, we have been used to seeing the likes of CSK and MI establish their dominance in the points table, more so CSK because MI have traditionally been slow starters but this time it is something different. Historically, teams like PBKS and DC have not been regulars around the top of the table but the tables have turned this time. Also Read | IPL 2025: Teams That Dropped the Most Catches So Far Bottom vs Top The bottom end of the table is being weighed down due to the sheer number of trophies down there. IPL heavyweights and 5-time champions each MI and CSK are placed at number 8 and number 9 respectively having lost 4 out of their first 5 matches. Just like them, 2016 champions SRH have also yielded similar results and are rooted to the bottom of the table. The road ahead for these three teams, in particular, seems bumpy and they would need some spectacular results from here on to make it to the playoffs which are still a long way ahead. Not to mention that these three teams were in a lot of people's top-4 picks to make it to the playoffs before the tournament began. The two remaining teams in the bottom half are inaugural champions RR and defending champions KKR (won in 2012, 2014 and 2024) and if we add them to the list, that makes it a total of 15 trophies out of the 17 editions in the bottom half of the table itself. Phew, that's crazy! Now, a top half of the points table in a tournament like the IPL containing just one trophy sounds kind of ridiculous right? But that is exactly how it is right now with GT being the only team out of the top-5 to have ever laid their hands on an IPL trophy, back in 2022. The other teams have not even won the IPL once, DC reached the final only in 2020, RCB in 2009, 2011 and 2016, PBKS in 2014 (when they were called KXIP) and LSG's best has been fourth-place finishes in 2022 and 2023. What do the numbers say? Remember, the 2009 edition was won by Deccan Chargers who no longer exist so we are basically talking about 16 trophies which tilts the scales even more in favor of the bottom half; 15 out of 16 trophies (93.75%) > 15 out of 17 trophies (88.23%). It is still early days in IPL 2025 with only 22 matches out of 70 in the league stages played so far and who knows how it will all look like by the end of it but it is highly unlikely that we are ever going to get a points table like this in the future, we better frame this up.
