Partiality in Indian cricket is a hot topic now especially after the Indian team coached by Gautam Gambhir ignored Shreyas Iyer from the 2025 Asia Cup squad. However, former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwari somehow indicated that likes and dislikes do play a role in selection. And tiwari thinks, MS Dhoni, the then Indian captain, probably didn't like him. Manoj Tiwari has literally played 15 matches for India in his career, where he has one hundred (104*) and a fifty. Tiwary recently spoke to Crictracker, where he expressed his agony towards MS Dhoni's ignorance towards him, unlike few batters. Even though the former Bengal captain made no criticisms on the former Indian captain, he said, "Everybody likes MS and obviously, he has proven over a period of time with his leadership, which I always say that his leadership qualities were very good. But somehow, in my case, I don't know. He's the only one who can answer your question. But I think there were a couple of individuals whom he really liked and gave full backing at that point in time. A lot of people know, but not everyone comes forward and speaks about it. So there is a very strong liking and disliking that happens in cricket everywhere. So I consider myself not liking one. He did not like me, maybe.” Read also: ₹10,000 Crore Lost? Earlier, during West Indies’ 2011 tour of India, he struck a superb century in the fifth ODI, sealing a 4-1 series triumph for the hosts. His next outing in the format was in July 2012, where he contributed with a crucial four-wicket haul that powered India to a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka. Reflecting on his career, Tiwary expressed disappointment over Dhoni’s decisions, stating that despite delivering strong performances, he never received the consistent backing and chances afforded to some of his peers. Tiwari said, "I think MS Dhoni, Duncan Fletcher, and the selectors will be the ones who will be able to answer that because till now, I haven't got any answer. Furthermore, I'm not someone who will call up the coach or the selectors or the captain at that time to answer me this. But I've earlier said that whenever I come across to MS Dhoni, definitely I'll ask him what are the main reasons are why I was not given the opportunity after scoring 100." He added, “There are a lot of players who have a different version of how Dhoni used to back his players. In my experience, see, I can only share my experience, what has happened to me. If he had really backed his players, then he would have definitely backed me because I performed in that particular match and over a period of time." MS Dhoni was pivotal in leading India through a transition, backing players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Suresh Raina, who later became mainstays. Although Manoj Tiwary never played Tests for India, Tiwary was a key figure for Bengal, scoring 10,195 runs in 148 matches, with a top score of 303*. He even returned from retirement to captain Bengal in the 2024 Ranji Trophy, finishing his career in a big win over Bihar.
