Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been among India’s most dominant players in ODIs over the past few months. Both experienced players performed exceedingly well in the series against Australia and South Africa. Rohit Sharma was declared “Player of the Match” for his performance in the series against Australia, while Virat Kohli received it for his performance in the series against South Africa. Their performance in scoring runs put all doubts on their ODI career in perspective, especially when the upcoming world cup would take place in two years. However, despite their brilliant performances, their head coach Gautam Gambhir did not say much about this issue when India defeated South Africa in the third ODI match in Vizag. Uthappa Taken Aback by Gambhir’s A former Indian cricketer, Robin Uthappa, who has played with Gambhir in Indian cricket as well as for their common team in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), spoke on his YouTube channel and was surprised that there was no appreciation shown by their coach. Uthappa said that it was expected of Gambhir to acknowledge Kohli and Rohit's commendable batting performance. Uthappa Said: "What I found surprising is the post-match of that series, in the press conference, I didn't see Gautam giving credit to either Rohit or Virat. Here are a couple of guys who've batted out of their skins and shown us how good they are and how good they can be. They reduced all kinds of doubts and shut down any naysayers about what they actually can do and will do for India when they are in the right kind of form. That felt strange." Uthappa felt that these two seniors were deserving of public acclaim, especially when their performances came when doubts were being raised about their long-term commitment to ODIs. He added: "First you've got to realise that the ODI World Cup is two years away. It's important to stay in the present. They are world-class players and their experience is important in the dressing room. They've been doing it for a long time. Hopefully, they can continue doing the same, which is going to be important in the 50-over format." Gambhir has clarified that both players are important for their side, but he has avoided talking much about their present performances and influence of their match-winning innings. Kohli and Rohit Extend Commitment for ODI Cricket To continue their ODIs and keep performing, Rohit and Kohli have decided to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This decision reveals that they are keen on preparing for their upcoming ODIs. Taking part in domestic 50-over cricket will help these players stay in form. Their inclusion in the tournament also sends a message that they are keen to continue playing a major role for India in ODIs, as India slowly marches towards the 2027 World Cup.
