India's men's Test bowling coach Morne Morkel stated that the team was not 'concerned' about England running after a large score when they postponed their second-innings declaration at Edgbaston. Morkel stated that the thought was to provide England with more than an hour of batting time on Day 5. India were already 484 runs in front at Tea on Day 4, Shubman Gill unbeaten on 100 and Ravindra Jadeja on 25. Rather than declaring immediately after Tea, they batted for another hour. They easily went over 600 runs, and finally declared at the last Drinks break of the day at 607 runs in front. By then, Jadeja and the remaining recognized batter Washington Sundar were at the wicket, with tailender Akash Deep padded up and prepared to go in as well. At press conference after stumps, Morkel said: “Worried? No, not really. I think if a team scores 500+ on the final day, then they deserve to win. So, I think it was just a little bit more time. Ideally, give an hour, a little bit more than an hour at them tonight, with Day 5 around the corner." With the massive target set, two successive wickets were taken by Akash Deep, and Mohammed Siraj took one more, placing England at 72/3 on Stumps. England now has to score 536 runs to win, and they have just seven wickets remaining. England's deputy coach Marcus Trescothick informed that his side isn't 'stupid' and that they would be okay with a draw if necessary. Morkel, though, was quick to remind everyone that England's vice-captain Harry Brook had previously stated they would attempt to chase any total India might post, and that could be an error. Morkel said: “Harry Brook said yesterday that they would go for the chase, it is going to be an exciting day of cricket. England have got success playing that style of cricket. If they are happy to take it on (so be it)." Morkel complimented Mohammed Siraj as well, mentioning that although he claimed six wickets in the previous innings, statistics don't entirely reflect his worth to the team.
