Former cricketer Murali Kartik was not satisfied with MI captain's choices by Hardik for the last over in the IPL 2025 match against LSG. He questioned why didn't Hardik start rotating strike while bringing in Mitchell Santner in to replace the out-of-form Tilak Varma. In 2014, MS Dhoni faced similar circumstances. India required 16 from the last over. He hit a six on the first ball and followed it up with runs for two. However, on the next ball to him, he denied single with Rayudu at the non-striker's end. Again on the fifth ball, he declined another run. England pacer Chris Woakes then gave a mere one run in the last couple of balls, helping the country pocket a win by three runs. Santner came in to bat in the penultimate over after Tilak Varma retired-out with a slow 25 off 23. The first ball saw Hardik Pandya smash a six to give MI hope, with 16 needed off five deliveries. However, Pandya chose not to give Santner the strike when 14 runs were required. He failed to score on the next ball and then rejected a single again. Pandya then miscued a full-toss in the slot, giving MI their third loss for the season. Murali Kartik criticized the team for their tactics and asked why Hardik had so blatantly denied Santner the strike. He went on to state that he had expected Santner, being a power hitter, to close out the game during the missed opportunities that Pandya had.
