The former selectors like Devang Gandhi and MSK Prasad had their own views after both the Indian batting stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hit rock bottom with their batting form. The Test series against New Zealand has given a nice highlight of them struggling to score runs. The 36-year-old Virat Kohli scored just 96 runs in the series, averaging just 15.50, his second lowest throughout his career. In 2017, he scored just 46, averaging 9.20, his lowest, against Australia. However, 15.50 is Kohli's lowest in the home series. Similarly, Rohit has been struggling with his form for at least 2 months. In September, in the series against Bangladesh at home, he scored just 42 runs in two matches. It was his worst performance at home and worst in nine years. Against New Zealand, he scored 91 runs, becoming the fifth Indian captain with the lowest batting average (15.16). Devang Gandhi emphasised on Domestics Despite their poor form, both players have denied to play at least one Duleep Trophy match. Regarding this, one of the former selectors, Devang Gandhi, remembered Sachin Tendulkar when he decided to play a Ranji match within a span of two weeks after an ODI series in 2000. In another three days, he was playing the Ranji final against Hyderabad team which had Mohammed Azharuddin and VVS Laxman and scored a fifty and a hundred. Tendulkar played Ranji semi-final and final in a space of two weeks in April after playing ODIs till end of March." In late January 2007, after India's ODI series against the West Indies and a tough Test tour of South Africa, Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, and Sourav Ganguly flew from Vadodara to Mumbai to play the Mumbai-Bengal Ranji Trophy final. Just 48 hours after the match, Tendulkar, Ganguly, and Zaheer were on a flight to Sri Lanka for an ODI series. The last time Kohli played a Ranji Trophy match was in 2013, and Rohit played his last on 2015. Gandhi also gave reasons, keeping in mind the workload. "Obviously workload is important and so is rest. But for batters, if you realise that you are not in best of form, you have to take recourse to domestic cricket. I believe one Duleep Trophy game could have been played." MSK Prasad restricts comparing the eras MSK Prasad, on the other hand, has a clear comment based on the different eras. According to him, in the early days, international cricket was not as frequent as it is now for the young cricketers. While countering Gandhi's remark, he said, "It is unlike Kapil paaji and Sunny sir's days, volume of cricket has increased exponentially. It takes a lot out of cricketers... I think, the one-off Irani Cup match is where the BCCI can make it mandatory for stars to show up for the Rest of India team but they have to slot it at a time which is not overlapping with a Test series." Not only that, he voted for the "rotation policy," ensuring players ample time to recharge before walking into a new game.
