The BCCi interim secretary Devajit Saikia debunked the rumors on ODI captaincy that the Indian team is not shying away from promoting Shubman Gill as the future all-format captain. A recent news from Dainik ajgran said that BCCI is looking at Shreyas Iyer as the ODI captain after Rohit Sharma's retirement. However, Saikia brushed off such claims, citing Gill has everything on his side. Speaking to Hindustan Times, "That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions." A BCCI official also said, "He [Gill] averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found some success and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket, when the time comes." Most recently the 2025 Asia Cup squad selection has caused huge drama, especially after Shreyas Iyer was snubbed. Despite his great performance for Punjab Kings in 2025, critics couldn't fathom his absence. Meanwhile, Gill got added to the squad right after the Test making a stable T20 top order unstable.
