David Wiese is named as the new St Lucia Kings captain for the next Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 season, starting next week. They are the defending team, having last won the title the previous year under Faf du Plessis. But Du Plessis will not play this season as he opted to play in The Hundred. Wiese explained how he was filled with excitement after being appointed skipper and thanked the franchise and its fans. Wiese stated: "I am truly humbled to be appointed your captain. This year, we will play with passion, heart and togetherness. You will notice us give all for one another and for you. And fans, we need you as part of it to fill the stadiums, raise the atmosphere and let's fill Saint Lucia with blue. Let's make this a memorable season." He made 121 runs in seven innings with a strike rate of 168.05 and an average of 40.33. He took 13 wickets on an economy of 8.34. Wiese joined the St Lucia franchise in 2021 and played 26 games for them. Head coach Daren Sammy had glowing words about Wiese and his long-term service to the side. Sammy said: "David Wiese has been a part of the family for a long time. He has been with us for several years and has delivered some great performances. We cannot wait to begin our first home match on the 23rd of August. We know Saint Lucia Kings are the best supporters and you will turn out at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground and color it blue, as you support our new captain and our team." He represented Namibia till his international retirement in 2024, having prior experience in the South Africa team from 2013 to 2016. Thus, Wiese is the first cricketer from an Associate nation to be given a full-time captains' role in a franchise league in a Test-playing country. He has captained teams such as Lahore Qalandars in the PSL and Northern Superchargers in The Hundred on a temporary basis. St Lucia Kings also stepped up at the CPL 2025 draft by recruiting power-hitting batter Tim David as their first-round recruit. CPL action begins on August 14 with a game between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. St Lucia Kings start defending their title on August 17, also against the Falcons, in North Sound.
