David Warner retired from Tests and ODIs earlier this year, playing his last game in the longer formats during the January 2024 Sydney Test against the West Indies. His final international appearance came later, on June 24, 2024, in a T20 World Cup match against India. Recently, however, Warner expressed a readiness to return to international cricket as an opener for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, should the selectors and team show interest. Previously, during his retirement announcement, he had mentioned being open to a comeback for the Champions Trophy in 2025 if needed. In a conversation with Fox Sports, she clarified the situation surrounding his return to cricket. Candice Warner on Fox Sports said: “I just got him home a little bit more and I’m thinking, what the hell? What’s going on now? He’s very passionate about playing for Australia and I think if George Bailey, the selector, or Andrew McDonald, the coach, picked up the phone and said ‘We need you’, he would jump at it. And of course, we would support him. But no, it’s definitely not going to happen.” She further said: "I think if he genuinely didn't think he was capable of doing it, he wouldn't have said that but that's not any disrespect to any of the openers or people (in the fray for selection). If he was to have gone down that path to play again, he would have had to have done it just like everyone else play Sheffield Shield and everything like that. But it's not happening. End of discussion.” India is set to face the Australian team in Perth for the opening match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series for 2024-25.
