Former Pakistani cricketer Danis Kaneria has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board for investing the major attention on the wrong aspect when the team needed a rebuild. Pakistan has received the hosting rights of any ICC tournaments after 28 years, and the board put all their blood and sweat into the stadium refurbishments and hosting responsibilities. Within that, PCB faced several criticisms regarding the timeline, but they successfully handed over the stadium to ICC and hosted the tri-series prior to the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, like many critics, Kaneria too pointed out that, in the tumult of hosting rights, the team selection somehow got a bit dulled. In a recent interview with IANS, Kaneria expressed, “Pakistan focused more on hosting the Champions Trophy than thinking about building a good team. They messed up big time. They don’t focus on their cricket and create controversy on India not coming to Pakistan despite knowing that a hybrid model will be followed in the tournament." Many former cricketers have questioned PCB’s squad selection, particularly the inclusion of players like Faheem Ashraf. Kaneria, echoing these concerns, believes the board failed to prepare the team properly. He highlighted Fakhar Zaman’s case, who was initially left out of the central contract after supporting Babar Azam publicly but was later recalled. However, Fakhar’s tournament ended abruptly due to injury, with Imam-ul-Haq stepping in as his replacement. Regarding Fakhar Zaman, Kaneria said, "There is no combination in the team; they have kept required players out of the squad. They did so with Fakhar Zaman due to his statement (against PCB) and now brought him back into the team." Apart from batting concerns, Kaneria also criticized Pakistan’s bowling attack, especially with Pakistan's prime pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi's pace abruptly dropping. He also sounded concerned about the unpredictability of Haris Rauf and is absolutely convinced of Abrar Ahmed's inclusion in the squad. “Pakistan have many issues, they have brought in Imam-ul-Haq as Fakhar’s replacement. There are two or three good players but apart from them, I don’t see anyone. They don’t have a good bowling attack. Shaheen’s pace has dropped, Haris Rauf is unpredictable, as he can concede 100 to 80 runs in a match and he hasn’t picked his line and length. Abrar Ahmed is an average spinner, he is no genius." Pakistan now faces a crucial match against India at the Dubai International Stadium on February 23. With pressure mounting, they need a drastic turnaround to keep their Champions Trophy hopes alive.
