South African allrounder Dane van Niekerk has joined the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the upcoming Women's Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2025. The team also introduced New Zealand's Molly Penfold and Ireland's Amy Hunter as replacements for Shabnim Ismail, Lauren Winfield-Hill, and Madeline Penna. This is the first franchise league appearance for van Niekerk since August 2023, when she featured in the Women's Hundred. She also featured in the first Women's Premier League (WPL) in 2023 where she represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru but she did not get an opportunity to play and was subsequently released ahead of the 2024 season. WCPL 2025 will be her first appearance in the Caribbean competition. Interesting Facts About Cricket History Van Niekerk's Return to Competitive Cricket Van Niekerk herself recently undone her global retirement after returning to domestic cricket. She even joined a training camp with the South Africa women's team but was not picked for the forthcoming Women's ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka from September 30. She had already retired from international cricket after being excluded from South Africa's T20 World Cup team in 2023 due to failing fitness standards. Though not included in the World Cup lineup, South Africa head coach Mandla Mashimbyi assured that she is still under consideration for future series. "She's being looked at for future series," Mashimbyi declared, leaving the door open for her comeback. At home, van Niekerk impressed for Western Province in the 2024-25 season. She finished as the fourth-leading run-getter in the CSA Women Pro20 Series, having registered one century and one half-century. The Guyana Amazon Warriors will start their WCPL 2025 league against Trinbago Knight Riders in Providence on Saturday. The fans will be keen to know how van Niekerk fares in her highly anticipated return to franchise cricket.
