The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced their plans to join women's cricket through the Women's Premier League (WPL) after they completed their fourth season in the league. CSK, one of the leading franchises in Indian cricket, is about to start its first women's cricket program after the men's game. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the franchise's future plans while speaking at the Invest in Tamil Nadu conclave. He established that immediate implementation of the move would not happen, while Viswanathan disclosed that CSK intends to invest in women's cricket throughout the upcoming years. Viswanathan stated: "Not immediately, but certainly in the coming years, CSK will expand its footprint. Our first target will be women’s cricket. We may also go into other sports over time." The WPL has experienced rising popularity, which has created expectations for CSK to enter women's cricket. The franchise maintains a massive fan base across India because its participation in the women's league provides major advantages to the competition. The WPL currently has five teams that represent Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. CSK stands among IPL's major teams but currently lacks a women’s team. Chennai Super Kings are not the only IPL franchise without a WPL team. Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad are also yet to step into women's cricket through the WPL. The latest information reveals that changes will happen soon. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has current discussions regarding the Women’s Premier League expansion, which will result in new teams being added soon. Parth Jindal, the Delhi Capitals co-owner, explained the BCCI's future plans for the league during the WPL auction. The board intends to stop using the current caravan-style format, which requires matches to take place at two or three different locations. During the auction in IPL 2025, Jindal said: "I think we would love to see the WPL home and away as well. The caravan format is okay, but it is not ideal,” Jindal said during the auction in 2025. “The window is very short right now, which is why the BCCI has to fit the WPL into this period. I hope we get a bigger and longer window going forward.” Jindal confirmed that the league will expand in the future. He added: “I think it is imminent that one or two new teams will come in at some point. That’s why the cycle is so short, with two WPLs happening over 14 months. I’m pretty sure the BCCI is planning to add a team, and with that, move to a home-and-away format. That would be ideal for fans, the game, and the growth of the WPL." The Women's Premier League 2026 season is almost coming to an end, with the final match scheduled to take place on February 5. The upcoming inclusion of CSK in the league will mark a major advancement for women's cricket in India, as the league continues to witness an expansion in size. The inclusion of CSK in the WPL will improve the growth of the league because CSK has a huge fan base and support, along with an established cricket system.
